The answer to that cucumber question!

Apart from “how do you get your jars sealed so tight?”, the question I get asked the most often is “why are they called bread & butter cucumbers?”!

So here’s the story…

Back in the day, a cucumber farmer in the US fell on tough times. His resourceful wife, Mrs Fanning, decided to use the small cucumbers - which had previously been considered waste – to create an innovative side hustle. Pickling them using a simple sweet brine, the resulting pickles were such a hit that Mrs Fanning was able to barter with her local shopkeeper, exchanging her pickles for household staples like… Bread & Butter! The name stuck and their popularity has been guaranteed ever since.

Pretty great story right? Gotta love a resourceful farmer’s wife who turns to her kitchen to make a buck when times are tough! A familiar tale…

Our Bread and Butter Cucumbers are a favourite and I hear so many stories about how they are enjoyed – family hamburger night, cheese boards with friends, sprucing up a packed lunch or straight from the jar (whilst hiding behind the fridge door)!

I’d love to see how you use your cukes – share your pics on insta and tag @thedilltickle

Thanks Mrs Fanning!
